Australia acknowledged in port upgrade
The Government of Nauru has acknowledged
the supportive role that Australia played in its successful efforts
to get approval from the United Nations' Green Climate Fund (GCF)
to upgrade the country's port.
The GCF approved an AU$35m funding
proposal for the Nauru port at its final board meeting of the year
in early October in Egypt, one of eleven climate finance
initiatives the board approved in different parts of the
world.
The Fund's primary function is to help
developing countries such as Nauru respond to climate
change. "One of
the keys to our success was the assistance of Australia,"
said Minister
for
Finance
David Adeang. "Australia
supported our delegation in Cairo to help make our case that the
port genuinely needs to be upgraded due to Nauru's
susceptibility to the effects of global warming.
"Mr Adeang said it was gratifying for Nauru
to have such a good friend in
Australia.
"This is further evidence of our ongoing
mutual cooperation."
