Australian shadow immigration
spokesman Scott Morrison visits Nauru processing centre
The Australian shadow immigration spokesman Scott Morrison is in
Nauru this week to speak with the Nauruan government and visit the
Regional Processing Centre (RPC).
Shortly after arriving in the country yesterday (3 Dec) Mr
Morrison met with Government Ministers as well as members of the
RPC committee, Commissioner of Police, Secretary for Justice and
representatives from the department of Foreign Affairs.
Following the closed door meeting, Mr Morrison told local media
that his role was to see how the Centre was operating.
He stated that as the political party (Liberal Party) that
pushed for the reopening of the centre, it was in their interest to
ensure that the centre was being run properly and the welfare of
the asylum seekers was being looked after.
Today (4 Dec) Mr Morrison is inspecting the Topside processing
centre and meeting with representatives from the Australian
Department of Immigration and Citizenship as well as members of the
Salvation Army and Transfield Services.
Mr Morrison will depart Nauru tomorrow (5 Dec).
