Milestone for Nauru audit office
The Nauru Department of Audit has reached
a milestone by tabling in Parliament the public accounts of the
2013/2014 financial year.
This confirms the Waqa Government's
commitment to international standards of transparency and
accountability.
In delivering the Government's budget,
Minister for Finance Hon David Adeang, MP said the completion of
the audit was the result of close and successful collaboration
between his office, Department of Finance and the Department of
Audit.
The Auditor General and his department are
continuing to work with the Department of Finance in finalising the
auditing of 2014/2015 annual public accounts, which are scheduled
to be tabled in Parliament by the end of September
2017.
The Ministry of Finance anticipates the
2015/2016 accounts to be audited by December
2017.
The backlog of audits had been exacerbated
by the Department of Audit being hampered by a lack of qualified
and experienced staff.
However, that void has since been overcome
by the Pacific Association of Supreme Audit Institutions (PASAI)
which has been supporting the office of the Nauru Auditor
General.
PASAI has also developed a regional
program to ensure the Auditor General has ongoing support to help
him finish this year's audit of Nauru's public accounts, as well as
other audits.
The Minister applauds the Auditor General
and his Department in assisting the Government in achieving its
reporting goals going forward.
