Nauru adopts 2030 Agenda for sustainable development at UNHQ in New York.
President Waqa and his delegation
arrived New York on the 23rd September to attend the 70th session
of the United Nations General Assembly. A historic event took place
today at the United Nations, where 193 Leaders adopted the new
global sustainable development agenda.
President Waqa is ready to join other World Leaders and also adopt
the outcome document of the new sustainable development agenda.
This ambitious global sustainable development agenda is entitled,
"Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development" that features 17 sustainable development goals that
aims to lift people out of poverty, build resilient and sustainable
societies for the future.
Nauru as the former Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States
(AOSIS) has been actively participating in this global process
since the Rio+20 Conference, the Future We Want. In Rio, member
States decided to launch a process to develop a set of Sustainable
Development Goals which builds upon the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) and the holding of the third international Conference
on Small Island Developing states (SIDS) that was held in Samoa in
2014. Nauru under the chairmanship of Bolivia as the Chair of the
G77 and China Group (2014) led the intergovernmental negotiations
to reach unprecedented consensus on the outcome document of the
SIDS conference entitled SIDS Accelerated Modalities Of Action
(SAMOA) Pathway that is featured in the 2030 Agenda, recognising
the special case of SIDS for sustainable development.
Nauru was also a member of the Open Working Group (OWG) troika of
Palau and Papua New Guinea which led and advocated the need for a
dedicated sustainable development goals on oceans and seas and
climate change that are now part of the 17 sustainable development
goals framework.
President Waqa will be adopting this universal ambitious and
transformative Agenda that closes one chapter in the many processes
that Nauru had led and been active through its New York mission and
open new possibilities and opportunities for its people.
