Nauru bank a big hit
Nauruans have answered the
country's call by enthusiastically supporting the island's first
bank in fifteen years.
When he proudly opened the bank recently in his acting role as
President, David Adeang urged people to "do it for their country"
and, for those with bank accounts overseas "consider where your
loyalties should now lie," - a clear appeal to support Bendigo
Bank.
"We have had about 300 new accounts set up since the doors opened
on June 2 which has been a fantastic show of support," said the
bank's general manager Greg Watson.
"Finally locals have somewhere to keep their money safe and secure
while also earning a return on their savings."
The Bendigo Bank agency is run by four full-time staff, including
three locals who were sent to Bendigo in Victoria for intensive
training.
"My team has done a first rate job, dealing with the hundreds of
new inquiries while answering questions from many who can't recall
the last time a bank operated on Nauru."
The agency's automatic teller machine (ATM) has been installed and
comes online soon while the bank has also taken over the ownership
of another similar ATM on the island at the Capelle and Partner
store.
Another exciting product available to customers shortly will be a
MasterCard debit card which can be used overseas, including
Australia.
The bank's manager Greg Watson is a thirty year veteran of the
finance industry and ran a similar operation in Fiji for more than
five years.
"My wife and I are delighted to be able to come to Nauru to
undertake this worthwhile role. We have received a warm welcome and
are committed residents now. We look forward to joining in and
being a part of the community," beamed Mr Watson.
