Nauru congratulates first
female PM for Samoa
His Excellency President Lionel Aingimea congratulates the
Independent State of Samoa on the election of its first female
prime minister, Fiame Naomi Mata'afa.
"This is truly a historic moment for Samoa and our collective
pacific region."
The prime ministership of Fiame Naomi Mata'afa was sealed in a
landmark decision of Samoa's Court of Appeal on Friday 23 July,
ending the 22-year reign of the former leader, Tuilaepa Sailele
Malielegaoi, who, at the time of the election was the world's
second-longest serving prime minister.
In a signed letter to the Prime Minister's office, President
Aingimea said the election of Samoa's first female PM "has
faithfully upheld the principle of democracy, evoking the desire
for change by the Samoan people.
"Your Excellency's steadfast position grounded in ethics
validated the rule of law and perpetuated the resolve and will of
the Samoan people.
"As Your Excellency assumes the highest position within the
Government of the Independent State of Samoa, the pride of your
family, especially your father, the late Fiame Mata'afa Faumuina
Mulinu' u II and first Prime Minister of Samoa will be echoed
throughout the country.
"Madam Prime Minister, I wish you every success in your new role
and look forward to working closely with you not only to foster and
strengthen the existing relationship between our two island nations
but also for a better pacific."
PM Mata'afa took her oath at an unofficial ceremony outside
Parliament House in Apia, Samoa on 24 May. The court ruling on 23
July, upholds that swearing-in.
