Nauru hands down another 10 positive refugee status determinations
The Government of Nauru
continues to hand down refugee status determinations with another
ten out of 21 positive determinations announced yesterday (22
May).
The group consists of four
single adult men and six people in two
families (husband and wife; father, mother and two sons aged 12 and
17).
Today's family groups are
from Iran and the men from Pakistan and
Afghanistan.
Similar to the arrangements
earlier this week (20 May) the family members were taken to their
new accommodation at the Anibare Lodge and a separate site for the
single adult men.
They were also met by
service providers and the local media.
Of the 21 determinations
handed down yesterday, 11 people were not found to be refugees and
remain at the Regional Processing Centre. They consist of three
single adult men and eight people in
families.
The refugees will move into
more permanent and more suitably located accommodation in the
second phase of their housing
arrangements.
Refugees that are resettled
into the community are free to move around the island, seek
employment and be part of the community.
The Nauru Community
Consultative Committee (CCC) is already receiving a positive
response from the community in relation to the buddy
system.
The buddy system is set up
to encourage community engagement and build friendships between the
refugees and the local community.
The Government of Nauru will
continue to hand down its refugee status determinations in the
coming weeks.
