Nauruan students awarded deep
sea mineral scholarships
His Excellency President Sprent Dabwido last night (13 Feb)
conferred scholarship certificates to two Nauruan students that
have been awarded full-time undergraduate scholarships being
offered by Nauruan owned deep sea minerals company, Nauru Ocean
Resources Inc., (NORI).
NORI is engaged in deep sea mineral exploration in international
waters between Hawaii and Mexico and Mr Sankey Deluckner and Ms
Marlaina Aroi are the first recipients of this scholarship.
In handing over their certificates, President Dabwido said he
was pleased with the students' interest in pursuing this line of
studies and thanked NORI for sponsoring the scholarships that would
serve to benefit Nauru as well as promote capacity building.
Ms Aroi was awarded a scholarship to complete a bachelor degree
in environmental science and Mr Deluckner has been awarded a
scholarship to complete a bachelor degree in engineering.
Both students will take up their studies at the University of
the South Pacific (USP) in Fiji this semester.
The NORI scholarship program recognizes excellence in academic
achievement and provides funding for Nauruan students to complete
undergraduate, post graduate and trade certificate courses.
NORI will further offer scholarships that place special emphasis
on building Nauru's capacity in the field of environment management
as well as certificates in level training courses for ship
engineers, diesel mechanics, maintenance engineers and similar
trades.
The scholarship program is part of NORI's ongoing commitment to
promote capacity building and social development in Nauru.
Students currently enrolled in environmental science degrees or
are looking to study environmental science are invited to contact
