World Leaders opened the General
Debate at the United Nations celebrating its 70th anniversary and
closed the special summit on the adoption of the 2030 Agenda.
President Waqa presided over the plenary meeting in his capacity as
the Vice-President of the General Assembly for the 70th Session.
President Waqa called on the Leaders from Denmark, Mexico and
Portugal to the podium to deliver their national statements and
thanked each Leader personally for their statement after delivery.
It has been a very busy week for President Waqa, with the annual
PSIDS-Russia meeting at the margins of the General Assembly having
met with Russia's Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov.
President Waqa also met with Prime Minister Abe (of Japan) as part
of the annual Japan-Pacific Islands meeting. He also attended a
breakfast meeting with Australia's Foreign Minister, Hon. Julie
Bishop and Pacific Island Forum Leaders.
The President will continue to meet with Nauru's traditional and
non-traditional development partners at the margins of the General
Assembly to recognise the long-standing cooperation and further
strengthen relations with the eventual implementation of the 2030
Agenda for sustainable development. President Waqa also delivered
his message that Nauru looks forward to an ambitious and legally
binding agreement in Paris at COP21 that will ensure a safe and
secure world for all.
