Parliament suspends 2 MPs for unruly behaviour
The Parliament of
Nauru has suspended two members of parliament citing unruly
behaviour in the last sitting of parliament in which they verbally
abused the speaker of parliament and the president as well as cause
damage to a microphone in parliament
chambers.
Members of Parliament
for the Constituency of Meneñ Hon Sprent Dabwido and Hon Squire
Jeremiah were suspended from the House following a motion moved by
Justice Minister David Adeang.
Votes were cast with
an overwhelming nine votes against fivein favour of the
suspension.
In moving the motion,
Minister Adeang noted the "unparliamentary, disorderly, shameful,
disgraceful and disgusting language and behaviour by two members of
parliament of this august House… directed at the two of the highest
offices of Nauru."
Mr Adeang also
proposed that all parliamentary privileges and entitlements be
suspended.
Speaker Ludwig Scotty
then asked the two MPs to vacate the
House.
Mr Dabwido said that
he will respect the decision of the Speaker but stated that the
verbal exchanges at the said sitting were in no way directed at the
Speaker.
The matter has been
referred to the Parliamentary Privileges
Committee.
