Where there is no vision, the people perish – Nauru starts off Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) conversation
23rd August 2017
Nauru- Nauru starts off its public consultation on the National
Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS). Hon. David Adeang,
the Minister of Finance and Sustainable Development, launched the
public consultation. 'The NSDS review is an opportunity to
refine the direction of the NSDS to meet the challenges of the
future while learning from the experiences of the past'.
Taking an inclusive approach to reviewing the NSDS, a
multi-sectoral Technical Working Group is (TWG) leading the public
consultation and will coordinate public comments on the NSDS. 'The
Working Group are here as Nauruan amplifiers, to ensure that we
embark together on this public consultation as a nation so that we
capture as many small and big voices of the people of Nauru'
Clarissa Jeremiah, CEO Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation and TWG
member said.
Mrs Jeremiah says the NSDS should set the direction for the people
of Nauru to improve their standard of living, 'where there is no
vision, the people perish'.
'This participatory approach taken by government is our
demonstrated commitment to ensure your voices are heard. I
therefore encourage you all to attend the meetings scheduled and
take an active role in discussing development priorities will
affect you and your communities in the future' Hon David Adeang
said.
For the next two weeks, public consultations will be held with
stakeholders, communities and districts are organized to allow
space for everyone to participate. A youth session is
schedule to be held to allow the youth of Nauru to come together
and discuss development issues that affect them.
The government of Nauru carried out a stocktake of the NSDS
2005-2025 and identified that current and immediate priorities
relating to economic, social and environmental issues continue to
be relevant. 'While progress in the identified areas is
encouraging, there is still a considerable amount of work to
sustain the gains made to date, and to remain focused to reach our
long-term goals of creating a better future for the people of
Nauru' said the Minister of Finance.
