Ambassador to the Netherlands
presents credentials
His Excellency President David
Adeang received the Ambassador-designate of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands to the Republic of Nauru, Ms Gerarda Braken, 29
April.
On arrival at the government office
Ambassador Braken was received by the Acting Secretary for Foreign
Affairs Christiana Detenamo before inspecting the Nauru Police
Force Guard of Honour and the playing of the national anthems of
the Netherlands and Nauru.
Ambassador Braken says she starts
her tenure with a deep sense of humility and curiosity regarding
the history and culture of Nauru and the Pacific, and while Nauru
and her country share a connection with water supply issues, there
is also a shared understanding of the challenges of Small Islands
Developing States and their challenges and the important role that
SIDS creates in the international domain.
"Our two countries have enjoyed a
successful partnership over the years, collaborating on various
fronts, including climate change, seabed harvesting and economic
development. Your presence here today promises to continue and
deepen these valuable ties," President Adeang said underscoring
that the threat of climate change weighs heavily on Nauru.
"Global warming and rising sea
levels threaten our land and our resources. The challenge of
climate change transcends environmental concerns; it is an
existential threat to our nation and international peace and
security," President Adeang said.
His Excellency looks forward to
advancing the partnership during the ambassador's tenure.
Ms Braken joined the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs in *990 and held positions in New Delhi and
Bangkok, as permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, and
in The Hague in the Asia and Oceania division, the UN division, and
the Economic Cooperation division.
This is Ms Braken's first visit to
the Pacific Islands region. She departs later this evening.
