Nauru chairs 133rd forum fisheries committee meeting
The 133rd Annual Forum Fisheries
Committee (FFC) officials meeting concluded on 14 May with Nauru
taking on the chairmanship.
Nauru Fisheries and Marine
Resources Authority (NFMRA) CEO Charleston Deiye takes over the
role from Glen Joseph of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in an
official handover ceremony.
"I am honoured to assume this
esteemed position and I am eager to serve the forum fisheries
committee to the same standard as the previous Chair Mr Glen Joseph
of Marshall Islands, who has undoubtedly done an outstanding job,"
Mr Deiye said.
FFC officials are required to meet
annually to approve budgets and work programs of the FFA and agree
on ways for the Pacific fisheries to progress; and this year the
meeting was hosted in Nauru.
Over the period of five days, FFC
officials engaged in deliberations on complex issues faced by FFA
members and providing a response solution to move forward while
maintaining a sustainable growth and management of fisheries.
The meeting involved proposals of
initiatives, resolutions to challenges, and endorsements of
strategic and implementation plans.
Several key endorsements included
the FFA's Climate Change Strategy implementation plan, a new
monitoring surveillance strategy, and the Gender Equality and
Social Inclusion (GESI), among others.
The FFC is the governing body of
the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) that supports the
17 member countries which are Australia, Cook Islands, Federated
States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New
Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands,
Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.//
